West Hampstead’s Music History
The Beatles’ Famous Decca Audition
Firstly, we couldn’t possibly talk about the musical history of West Hampstead without mentioning Decca Records! Now a rehearsal space for The English National Opera, 165 Broadhurst Gardens spent 80 years as the home of Decca Records. Their studio here is where ‘King of Skiffle’ Lonnie Donegan recorded the album “Rock Island Line”.
Decca Records is the home of the single biggest mistake ever to happen in musical history. Did you know on the 1st January 1962, The Beatles auditioned for Decca Records and were rejected?! This is widely regarded as the biggest error in the history of the Music Industry. Here’s a well-updated Wikipedia page on the subject. It’s hard to believe that The Beatles weren’t snapped up by Decca isn’t it?
Speaking of the fab four, don’t forget that Abbey Road studios and the famous Abbey Road crossing is just down the road from West Hampstead. The main man himself, Sir Paul Mccartney was recently spotted walking over arguably the world’s most famous zebra crossing. Sir Paul is one of many A-list celebrities who can be spotted in or around West Hampstead so make sure you keep your eyes peeled. You can also watch all the action live from the Abbey Road using the Abbey Road Cam.
The Railway Pub & The Klooks Kleek
The building next to the old Decca building was and still is The Railway pub, now best known as somewhere for football fans to congregate before heading up the Jubilee line to Wembley. The Railway pub has a fantastic musical legacy, as does the now closed Klooks Kleek club above, which hosted Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton (who famously had a guitar stolen from there one night!) West Hampstead current day music scene
West Hampstead has certainly changed a lot since the days of Decca records and the Klooks Kleek club as has its nightlife and music scene. For 38 years West Hampstead was home to ‘Lately nightclub’. Sadly, the most eccentric music venue in West Hampstead has recently closed down, which means it’s also lost its Thursday open mic night. It’s been a difficult time for venues in NW6 with the closure of ‘The Good Ship’ – the venue which helped launch the careers of Adele, Kate Nash and The XX. Although one venue in Kilburn (a stone’s throw away from West Hampstead) is still hosting an open mic night. The Brondes age pub hosts ‘smokin mic’ every Saturday.
Why not test out your new skills from your West Hampstead guitar lessons and give the open mic night a go! It’s a great way to meet fellow musicians, build your performance confidence and make the most of your guitar playing. Your Bruce Music guitar teacher will be more than happy to support you working towards playing a local open mic night during your weekly guitar lessons, helping you develop repertoire, performance skills and confidence. If it’s something you want to do, give it a go, you won’t regret it!
